January 11 Reading: Joshua 6-10
Joshua 7:21when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
It is impossible to turn off the eyes during our waking hours. The eye is never satisfied (Eccl 1:8). What happens after a scene,
In Joshua 7:21 we read about Achan who confesses to seeing a beautiful cloak, 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold. When he saw those items his heart went into processing mode. The LORD had previously ordered that all items were devoted to destruction (Joshua 6:17). However, there were some were not to be destroyed but to be placed into the treasury (Joshua 6:19). No Israelite was to personally profit from the spoil of the city.
Achan’s eye gate showed him some beautiful and valuable things and then his heart chose to take what had been forbidden. Sound familiar? Do you remember Genesis? Have you ever taken something that was not yours? This is our human problem. Knowing what is right, but doing the contrary.
Friends, only Christ can fix the heart to consistently do what is right. In fact, the heart is so deceitful and filled with self-indulgence it is even possible for those who are owned by Christ and possessed by the Holy Spirit to chose what is forbidden.
Proverbs 4:23 is instructive for the believer. “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
So during those waking hours remember the challenge of the heart, “When I see… then I will…”
