The POWER of GOD
Modern man has lost any sense of the absolute power of God. There is little fear of God in the world and sadly in the church too. So many churches are filled with members who are living unholy and impure lives. Conveniently, his children forget everyone will give an account before the Supreme Judge.
Matthew 12:36 36
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,
Psalm 18:7-15 is David’s best attempt to describe the unmatched power of God. David attempts to describe the power of God by making an analogy of the most powerful elements in nature.
The power of God surpasses the force of any earthquake that pegs the Richter scale (Ps 18:7).
The power of God surpasses the force of the fiercest wild fires that consumes millions of acres (Ps 18:8).
The power of God surpasses the black threatening storm clouds that cause sensor lights to turn on in the middle of the day (Ps 18:9).
The power of God surpasses the force of a category 5 hurricane by a 100 times (Ps 18:10-11).
The power of God surpasses the full strength of the summers sun’s brilliance at midday (Ps 18:12).
The power of God surpasses the multiple supercharged lighting strikes consisting of 100 million volts and 100,000 amps. (Ps 18:13-14).
The power of God surpasses two additional breathtaking physical events.
-
The mixture of hailstones and coals of fire raining down upon the earth (Ps 18:12, 13). This is an astounding description of an unlikely relationship. Hailstones require below freezing temperatures with in the clouds. Coals of burning fire seem to require the clouds to be like a match setting coals on fire. Now if mankind saw such a phenomenon I do believe there would be a great fear set upon their hearts. The days ahead can expect such an event according to Revelation 8:7 with an added element.
Revelation 8:7 7
The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. - The other physical event would be the emptying of the oceans to expose the nakedness of the sea floor. This is an impossibility for mankind with all his technology and machinery, but for God it is a simple exhale from his nostrils (Ps 18:15).
There are no words to completely capture the immensity of the power of God. These words in the Psalm 18 are stunning. It is easy to read over them without appreciating the awesome metaphors depicting the exceedingly and magnificent power of God. Oh friend, fear the One who has all power and authority in heaven and earth. In case you don’t know Him his name is Jesus.
Luke 12:4–5 4
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5
But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!
